WOMEN'S EMPOWERMENT

A major cause of the backwardness of tribal regions is the weak organisational base of the tribal communities. People live in close-knit rural communities in tribal regions, but when it comes to organising for political action, the task presents great difficulties.

Attempting to intervene in this area of critical concern, AGRAGAMEE has taken up various programmes of capacity building, which include camps and village and panchayat level workshops. In addition, people have also been given systematic exposure to regions where people's initiative has had a local impact.

Ama Sangathan grew out of the efforts of Agragamee, which has been working in Kashipur since 1981. Agragamee has endeavoured to empower tribal communities through capacity building and people's organisation. It has enabled the tribal community, especially women, to raise their voice on several issues, including minimum wages, rights over land and the delivery of government programs.

At the village level the people's organisation consists of village committees, youth clubs, mahila mandals and saving groups. At the panchayat level the people's organisation consists of all the concerned representatives of the panchayat. After the organisation becomes strong in the village and panchayat level it is further extended to the level of the panchayat samiti.
At this level, groups are mainly women's organisations.
The district-level orgnisation is built with the help of block-level organisation and maintain a proper co-ordination among the district-level organisations the state-level organisation is formed.
