WATERSHED

Increasing population pressure, higher demand for food and fodder, impact of growing consumerism, coupled with rapidly deteriorating socio-economic conditions of larger section of the population of the country have caused severe ecological and environmental problems. These may be attributed to unrestricted exploitation of natural resources.

The tribal populations have suffered a lot due to the geographical location of the area as well as lack of appropriate and integrated programmes for their development. The vast natural, human and other resources of the area have not been properly managed. Various land-based development programmes have failed to attract the farmers as their production seems to be highly disproportionate to the investment.

Watershed programmes primarily envisage an integration of several development activities such as soil conservation, land & water management, agriculture, reforestation and animal husbandry with special emphasis to relate these actions with human issues and to develop the capability of the target population at the micro level befitting to the local conditions.

The traditional skills and knowledge of the people need to be improved so as to cope with the changing socio-economic condition and environment for sustainable development. In order to check further depletion of the existing resources and bring about socio-economic changes keeping a balance between the production and the environment, watershed approach has been taken as comprehensive programme of action with a view to address some of the basic questions of survival.
