AMA
SANGATHAN |
The word 'ama' in
Oriya means 'our' and 'sangathan' translates to 'group'. The name
indicates the unity and collective strength of tribal women. Ama Sangathan
has lent its voice to women, enabling them to fight against exploitation
and injustice.
By giving them a platform on which to stand and bring certain issues to
the fore, Ama Sangathan has proved that given the space, freedom and opportunity,
tribal women have it in them to be powerful spokespersons, campaigners
for justice and imposing leaders. Find out more about Ama Sangathan's Profile. |

Ama Sangathan grew out of
the efforts of Agragamee, which has been working in Kashipur since 1981.
Agragamee has endeavoured to empower tribal communities through capacity
building and people's organisation. Leadership by women was actively
promoted at both the village and panchayat levels and savings groups
were formed. The panchayat level mahila mandals took the initiative
to federate at the block level. Ama Sangathan is one such Block level
federation of mahila mandals in the Kashipur Block of Rayagada district. Read more about the Structure of the organisation.
The
origin of Ama Sangathan and its role as an apex organisation can be
traced to a struggle that was met with victory by the women of Mandibisi,
a village in the Kashipur Block. They were successful in gaining control
over the procurement, processing and marketing of MFP (in this case,
hill brooms) after a long battle with the government and contractors.

women, to raise their voice on several issues. Rights to minimum wages,

of primary concern to tribal communities. And rightly so. Here's more about
